The afanc is a giant fairy beaver 12' long, with a 6' long tail, weighing about one ton. The afanc has a voracious need for fresh timber and can devastate forests. It is also fiercely territorial, has evil tendencies, and usually attacks on sight. It can be pacified by a virgin female.
Afancs can, once per day, polymorph into a crocodile or a dwarf. The afanc retains its low Intelligence, even in dwarf form, and uses this ability more at random than for any tactical advantage.
Damage inflicted on afancs by wooden weapons suffers a -2 penalty (to a minimum of zero). They save as 9th level clerics because of their magical nature.
As a fairy, the afanc is adversely affected by iron. It takes 1 point of damage for every round it spends in contact with 10 lbs. of iron (a full round, as being hit by iron weapons does not do extra damage). It cannot enter consecrated holy ground, such as a chapel or graveyard.
