A barghest is a fairy that resembles a huge, black-coated mastiff with fire radiating from its eyes and mouth. It stands 5' tall at the shoulder and weighs about 400 lbs. When it bites, 1d8 is from the physical bite and 1d8 is from the fire damage. If, for whatever reason, a barghest chooses not to bite, it can still breathe fire up to 5' away for 1d8 damage (save vs. breath weapon for no damage). The front half of a barghest is immune to fire, but the rear of a barghest still takes half-damage from fire (if attacked from behind).
Barghests are excellent trackers, with a 5 in 6 chance of following a trail made in the last 24-hours. They can naturally detect invisibility. They cannot fly, but their ability to make 30' running long jumps and 8' high jumps sometimes gives the impression of flight.
As a fairy, iron affects a barghest adversely. It takes 1 point of damage for every round it spends in contact with 10 lbs. of iron (a full round; being hit by iron weapons does not do extra damage). The barghest cannot enter consecrated holy ground, such as a chapel or graveyard, and clerics do an additional +1 damage per level against them.
